It's colourless and bleak, and isn't much fun to look at as starting on the normal side of the world, but it makes a good and easy start. You also have less wizards to deal with right away, which lets you explore more and get a feel for the game without anyone bothering you right away. You could also start with Dwarves, for example, they're an easy race to play, in my opinion of course, I'm no expert, but as a newish player myself, they are a easy race to play as.
